Our #AfricanGoodNews for the week highlights the Nigerian music industry which has experienced tremendous success with so many amazing artistes doing great work. Currently, Burna Boy, Davido and Wizkid are unarguably 3 of Africa’s biggest artistes.
From awards to sold out concerts in global venues, show fees, top tracks, interviews, features and more, these guys are phenomenal African music ambassadors. In alphabetical order, I present the best of Africa.
Burna Boy is a Nigerian Afro-fusion singer and songwriter. He shot to fame in the music industry with the release of his lead single “Like to Party” from his debut studio album, L.I.F.E.
Although he experienced some slow time, Burna Boy didn’t stop churning out good music and his hard work finally paid off In 2018. He was featured on “Sunshine Riptide”, a track from Fall Out Boy’s Grammy-nominated seventh studio album, MANIA (2018) .
The Atlantic Records artist released his third studio album “Outside” on 26 January 2018 which was ranked by several music platforms as the best Nigerian album of 2018. It peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart and won Album of the Year at the 2018 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. In October 2018, Burna Boy performed before a sold-out crowd at London’s O2 Academy Brixton. He was announced as one of Spotify’s New Afro Hub Takeover Artists and also recognized as YouTube’s Artist on the Rise with a billboard in Times Square New York.
In 2019, he performed at the 2019 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and also released a 4-track collaborative EP with electronic duo DJDS.
In June 2019, He won Best International Act at the BET Awards, announced as Apple Music’s Up Next artist and was featured in a solo song in Beyoncé’s Lion King inspired album “The Gift”.
Burna Boy’s fourth studio album, AFRICAN GIANT was released in July 2019 which he’s currently promoting on a global stage. From Jimmy Kimmel Live to Trevor Noah, Beats 1 radio and so much more, Burna Boy has everyone listening to his unique music and achieved the seamless international crossover many artists crave for, all while being consistent with his IDENTITY.
Davido is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer. He rose to the limelight at 19 with back to back hits in 2011, with “Back When” and “Dami Duro” In 2012.
At 140M views of his double platinum single FALL, Davido has the most viewed YouTube video in Africa. In 2016, he signed to Sony/RCA as the first African artist to “sign a global record deal”. He won the MOBO Award for Best African Act and also made history as the first African artiste to perform at the MOBO Awards in 2017.
Combining music with fashion plus having the biggest record of that year “IF”; Davido collaborated with Orange Culture to create an IF fashion collection exclusive to Selfridges, a first by an African artiste.
In 2018, he sold-out a 10,000 capacity venue in Suriname (a small South American country), received the Artiste of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Single at The Headies 2018 awards. His hit single IF was certified Diamond and he became one of the first African artistes to sell out the O2 Academy Brixton 5,000 capacity and one of 2 African artistes to sell out the 20,000 capacity O2 Arena with the first being fellow Nigerian, Wizkid.
With arguably the biggest and longest running tours by an African artist, Davido performed at our shows from all over the world with his 30BG tours. He also performed at the renowned Wireless Festival in London where he stole the show.
His latest single featuring Chris Brown titled Blow My Mind became the first Nigerian song to get 1 million views on YouTube within 12hours of release.
Wizkid is a Nigerian singer and songwriter who rose to prominence in 2010 with the release of Holla at Your Boy. Since then, the StarBoy hasn’t stopped making big moves.
In 2016, Wizkid collaborated with Drake and Kyla on ONE DANCE which became one of the biggest songs of that year. In 2017, he joined an elite list of iconic African artistes like Sade Adu, Mariam Makeba and Youssou N’Dour who have sold out the exclusive Royal Albert Hall, London.
In May 2018 Wizkid became the first African to host a sold-out show at the 20,000 capacity O2 Arena with his Afrorepublik concert. Aside music, the RCA artist and founder of StarBoy Records delved into fashion/ modeling where he collaborated with Nike to design and sell customized jerseys for StarBoy FC, making him the first African artiste to do so. Next, he was walking with supermodel Naomi Campbell at Dolce & Gabbana’s runway at the Milan Fashion Week.
Wizkid has worked with various global artistes including Drake, Major Lazer, Zara Larsson, Future, Ty Dolla $ign and most recently Beyoncé in her latest album, The Gift where his featured song, Brown Skin Girl became an instant crowd favorite. With over 50 awards both locally and internationally including BET Best African Act, MOBO Awards Best International artiste, MTV EMA award, The Headies, SoundCity awards and much more, Wizkid keeps making Africa proud with his musical prowess and trailblazing moves.
